Chinese Cuisine
The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

We came here on a Saturday around 1pm for lunch. The restaurant is located in a small shopping/restaurant area and it was busy that afternoon--we were happy to get the last parking space. There were ten of us and we sat at their only big table, which had a spinning table in the middle for our food. We order a variety of dishes: spicy fish fillet, sizzling beef in black pepper sauce, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, dry fish with eggplant pot, Peking duck--and others I can't recall. Some of the dishes were too salty (eggplant), and I wished we order some fishes that had different types of sauce (most of them were in the oyster sauce). But the dishes were great overall; my favorite was the spicy fish fillet. Overall, eight dishes were enough to feed ten people, with food leftover. Including tip, the bill came out to be around $15 per person--a great deal!

I'm always satisfied when I come here. I LOVE the CRAB RANGOON, the egg rolls, lettuce wraps and the fried wanton for appetizers. I usually get General Tso's Chicken. The portions are more than expected. I will continue to be a customer.

Cheap but good! You can probably split an order here even if you normally don't. They have huge portions. I recommend them if you're looking for good Chinese food. They have a bunch of traditional dishes sprinkled in the middle of the more American dishes. Try and appetizer (crab cakes or spring rolls) with a traditional dish, and you'll have a cheap, quick, filling meal. What more do you want?

I love this place - love it so much that I had my traditional wedding reception here. They serve the best chinese restaurant in Kansas City. Sweet - hearted staff, fast service, warm and pleasant atmosphere, great food, reasonably priced and huge selections. My favorites dishes are salt and pepper shrimp and calamari, peking duck and ribs, garlic lobster, seafood soup and basically everything on their menus. I can list out a few more but you get the point, try everything on their traditional and/or regular menu! If you are having a hard time selecting an option, just get two. You'll be happy that you have dinner for that night or lunch the next day. Ask Jeannie or Tony if you're having an episode of Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe and really need help choosing a dish!

Was introduced to this place by a Chinese friend who has been in KC for school. She said this is probably the closest to authentic in town, so with that said, we went in to check out the place. We went in 30 min before closing hours, so it we were the only customers besides another table. The lighting is a bit dark, but not to a romantic level. We were greeted by one who appeared to be the owner of the place, since my friend greeted them in an informal way, which, to Chinese people, means that they are on a familiar term. We conversed a little bit and decided to go with three dishes to try utilizing family style. We got a tofu stew, eggplant, and a beef stew dish. Since it was a cold day, stew just makes sense, so don't judge! It was good, but nothing more. As comforting as the dishes are, it was a bit too greasy for my taste. Yes, Chinese food is not the healthiest choice of cuisines, but the difficulty of the dishes which we ordered are not at all hard. It was something we can make at home, but healthier. I can sense a slight hint of MSG with a little bit too much grease for my taste. But for the convenience, and it being really close to where I live, I would come back if I ever feel lazy.

I have been a restaurateur at some point in life. I believe that the biggest thing to rate a business on is their CONSISTENCY. And in this regard New Peking could serve as a ROLE MODEL. They do the restaurant like a religion! Their portion sizes, the quality of ingredients, the taste, the service...everything meets standards for 5 stars, hands down! It has always been worth every penny, with ultimate satisfaction! Try their traditional Chinese menu. Cantonese roast duck, Mandarin duck, boiled fish, whole fish, salt and pepper ribs, all the hot pots, braised eggplant, scallion cake...pick anything, even the combination fried rice!..if you have never done a traditional hot pot, you might even want to try that. In case you didn't like the taste of their cooking, I would recommend choosing Chinese restaurants by cuisine then (they at least have 8 different). But I have taken all my friends here and success rate is 99%, literally!! If I had to force myself to criticize anything, I could say that they may be, don't have a fancy décor like some other popular Chinese restaurants (especially around plaza). But their décor is certainly very decent. With the stuff you get and price you pay, one would be more than willing to do away with the fancy light and ceiling! I have seldom been as happy with a restaurant in my life. I have happily spent a substantial part of my eating out expenses here and that too for last 7 years since I visited first; and same seems to be the case for most of their customers, can never stop coming back!

This is the first Chinese restaurant Ive been to up here... We came lunch time and the lunch menus are super good value! How they make $$$ I do not know! Oh wait... One reviewer said the owner yelled at her and said they dont make money on the lunch menu! LOL Anyways... I asked for the dinner menu because how you gonna be asian and get that lunch menu stuff. We ordered chow fun, That weird appetizer thing with the flame thing?! *never heard of it before!!*, The duck with the hoisin sauce, and pepper shrimp. That appetizer was awful... I get why people in the mainland like it, but it was all prefab and cheap and gross. The flame to cook already pre-cooked food... Novelty. The pepper shrimp was the only thing saving this experience for me. As I love me some fried shrimp heads!!! LOVE THE HEADS! I ate only the heads that day and saved the shrimp for later. The duck was OLD! You can tell from the picture I took and someone elses picture. They had to nerve to serve me some old disgusting duck and at those prices I was paying?!! And the Chow Fun just really drove home the overall theme of the food here... TOO MUCH SAUCE!! They sauce everything waaaay too much. Their sauces are way too sweet and just overpowers any kind of taste you want from the dish itself. I guess thats how they disguise the old duck and ingredients they use. Never be back... over $60 and I get this crap... Please.

Came here one 2012 cold day with the brother.. Large Portion for the price you pay which, trust me, I eat more than most large men I've encountered. Continuing with a Disclaimer: For authentic (otherwise get out if your palate is too cheap or mind too narrow for the real deal) Chinese, it is unfair to place heavy critique of the food based on portion vs. price . I hope you critique the quality of your foods with a knowledgable mind. The chef adds his/her/their own taste to their dishes --- my brother highly recommends their beef fried rice with special request for less butter in the dish. Quality is whole(some?), and if you actually know good Chinese food.... well. On ambience and structural/facility maintenance: Low ceiling makes it claustrophobic. Dim lights, unkept walls and seating areas are not ideal for date nights. If you are there for food alone, and your buddies are foodies there for food, then you will be Okay. Allow me to explain that the cleanliness and cluttering is typical of any Chinese out in San Francisco California. I assume it is a greater concern for them to serve a good meal than keep up with washing walls and cleaning incurable stains from their carpets. With this in mind please don't go and reel over with unforeseen surprise at the cleanliness. At the same time, please. It really isn't that bad.

I've been going here for years. Stopped in on my recent visit to KC and noticed a decline in customer service and product. It was just mediocre and not the brilliance that it used to be back in my KC days. Open late. I appreciate that, at least
(3)Ken B.
Gross! This was not the response I thought I would be having after seeing their Yelp rating, but gross, gross, gross. I don't care if the food is authentic or not, it was not fresh and it was not good. For the price that we paid, it should have been amazing and three quarters shouldn't have been left on the plate. The atmosphere was dingy and beat up. The lighting was weird and there were about 5 different styles of decor going on, all worn out and confusing. The staff lacked. If this was some small, hole in the wall place with great food I would get the reviews, but this is an expensive restaurant with bad food and bad atmosphere. Did I go to a different New Peking? What did I miss? Tell me because I have no plans on going back!

Yes, I am super picky about Chinese food. I thought after the positive reviews New Peking received that we would have a better experience. We dined there the evening of the music fest (had no clue it was going on and was shocked that we found a parking spot in the lot!!) We arrived and it looked like they were in the middle of a renovation. It just felt dingy! I think we started with the sizzling rice soup (recommended by our server) and it was just super bland. I can't even remember what we ordered for our entrees, but one was a shrimp and chicken dish that was just as bland (and it was supposed to be spicy) and something else. We had plenty of leftovers and didn't even bother to bring them home. Maybe we went on an off night, but I definitely won't be returning to find out.
(2)Joel N.
New Peking is simply wonderful. I frequent this business since it is near my work. DInning in or carry out its always a positive interaction with the staff. I have to say they are the nicest resurant staff I have ever met. And that is with years of food service under my belt. New Peking is far more than great service. The food is DELICIOUS! You will also enjoy the dinning environment. The tables/seating are to the rear of the resturant which provides peace and quiet during your meal. We all know how crazy westport can get on the weekends since it is in middle of KC's bar district. PLEASE I urge you to give them a shot!
(5)Haley W.
Not bad. There was a few pieces chicken in my tofu, which was disappointing. Kin Lin is better.
(3)Craig M.
Worst Chinese I've had in a long time. The Peking chicken was soggy and smelled of urine. Couldn't even finish it. Would not recommend.
(1)anna w.
I was too lazy to drive to my regular place... saw the good reviews on here and decided to try New Peking. TERRIBLE!!!! I am eating it now cursing myself! $40 I spent for this bland boring chinese. I got sesame chicken yuck and beef and broccoli. My fav chinese dishes... these are truly bad. I will never go here again. Instead go to New Chinatown on Johnson Drive. Now that's good food!
(1)Julian G.
I go here all the time. GREAT FOOD! General Tso's...best. My friends and I from UMKC come here at least once a week it seems like.
(5)Keanon L.
This is some if the best Chinese I have had in quite a while. The back pages of the menu are filled with incredibly authentic dishes like tendons, tripe, tofu, etc. This is the badge of great Chinese for me...a menu that appeals to people from China. Americanized Chinese is sweet and weird and gross to me and I've basically given up on it. I'd been here in the past, years ago before my food tastes became as all over the place as they are now. I'll be coming back very soon. There are dozens of dishes I want to try including some interesting vegetarian dishes, duck, and quite a number of Korean dishes oddly enough. Korean 3 minutes from home! This excites me. The decor is OK. Service was fast and friendly. I really enjoyed my tendon noodle soup, fresh spring rolls, and kimchi. My daughter even tried some of everything! It's a rare moment in dining out together for her to be so adventurous. Follow her lead and do the same! This is a perfect example of why this site is so great... I might not have ever come back here if not for the reviews and comments of fellow Yelpers! Nice. Addendum! 4/7/2014: I tried the duck and tofu hotpot and the spicy braised pork with napa last night and both were INCREDIBLE. Can't wait to come back again.

I took my 4 year old on a lunch date with me and chose New Peking since she loves Chinese food. I was a bit nervous that we would have to wait when going just after noon on a Friday but they sat us right away and the waitress came right over to get our drink orders even with a full dining area. We ordered the lunch specials which were $6.99 and included soup, entree, fried rice, veggie egg roll and crab ragoon. I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't choose wonton soup for my princess with the lunch special so I had to pay an extra $2.25. The wontons in the soup had a pea size piece of meat in them but had mushrooms and spinach leaves in addition to the wontons. I had hot n' sour soup and it was ok (not as rich as I'm use to but still pretty good). The lunch portions are large enough for two in my opinion. The General Tso was perfectly crispy with just the right amount of sauce. I really liked that they accommodated my request for the sweet n' sour sauce on the side for my princess and the waitress was kind enough to ask about the veggies too stating she knew some kids were funny about vegetables. The crab ragoon was good (not the best I've had but top 3 for sure) but the veggie rolls were not crispy and needed a bit longer in the fryer. The twin rolls were delicious with cream cheese and jumbo shrimp in a crispy wonton. My daughter loved them too. Overall the food was delicious and the service was superb with the waitress checking on us often and keeping our drinks full at all times.

Just didn't taste good at all. Crab rangoon was inedible. braised pork was flavorless and soggy. Menus look nice though...
(2)Mike H.
We have been here three times now. The food is outstanding - the House Beef is a must (very tender) and so is the Lemon Chicken (it has a really great fresh lemon flavor)!! The help is friendly but it seems consistently on the slow side...would still highly recommend this restaurant!!

I purchased a Groupon several weeks ago, and after looking at the overall rating of this place, thought it may be a good place for some dinner. The portions were extremely large, and that was about the most positive thing about this place. We got here right at 6:00pm, prime time for dinner. They were 4 tables of customers, and way too many staff. When we peaked around, nearly half of the staff were sitting down, and were observed playing on their phones. I chose to order something off of their authentic menu--double delight shrimp, while my partner ordered his usual--vegetable lo mein. Dishes were served, home style. The amount of food for each dish was definitely meant for home style, the portions were way too large for just one. I was a bit appalled by my double delight shrimp, because there is no way that this dish would ever be served in China. One half of the dish was a vegetable and shrimp stir fry, and the other half was a sweet and sour shrimp. Both sections had water chestnuts and bamboo, in fact, there was way too much bamboo, as it overpowered both sections. It tasted like the bamboo juice that canned bamboo comes in!! The vegetable and shrimp stir fry was near tasteless, cooked in what tasted like a clear chicken broth, and the sweet and sour shrimp was way too sweet. It could have been the fact that one dish had so much taste, that by the time I got to the second half, my taste buds were dead and could no longer taste the other half. On a positive note, the shrimp were very large. I tasted my partners lo mein, and it was so salty, I couldn't even bear to eat another bite. Our Groupon was 11$ for 20$ worth of food; not worth it without the Groupon.

Wow, the boiled fish on the chinese menu was REALLY GOOD, so tender and nicely spicy. Went here with a large group sharing dishes, and it was my (and a few other people's) favorite thing. Eggplant was good too. Final price seemed reasonable for the large quantity of food we got.
(4)Katie W.
We tried this because of a Groupon, which I am glad we did since it is close to our house. The service is great, the portions are generous and the food is excellent. We will be regulars here from now, and lunch is a great deal.
(5)Steven K.
without a doubt, the best chinese in KC! No, make that the best chinese food anywhere. I go here once or twice a week, never get tired of it. The Peking chow mein, cashew chicken, and house beef, any of the soups, the shrimp toast, all GREAT!
(5)Anne-Mari S.
Very good chinese food. Reminds me of the chinese food back home that was rated bay areas top ten years in a row.
(4)Brian H.
Service was good and restaurant was very nice and clean, although the food was mediocre. the food was not bad, but not as much to my liking as most chinese restaurants.
(2)Danny N.
I've been meaning to get back here for a while. Came alone on a previous trip and left the restaurant feeling stuffed but wishing someone else was with me so I could order more food :) My buddy Ryan and I came in tonight after a long day of work with empty stomachs. We tried the 4 course meal sample. IT WAS AWESOME 1. Starts with sizzling rice soup. A light but flavorful broth. Seafood and veggies in the soup then topped with hot rice that SIZZLES when it meets the soup. 2 sampler appetizer platter with a nice spread of finger foods. Some beef on a stick that you heat up via fire. Egg rolls, crab Rangoon, chicken wing, fried shrimp, and a pork rib done Chinese style. We didn't finish all the appetizers as we were saving room for the meal 3 entrees. Upon recommendation from waitress we chose Kung Pao combo and beef & scallops with green beans. Both entrees were tasty. The kung Pao dishes can sometimes be all nuts and fillers, but here we got a bunch of beef, chicken, and shrimp. The flavor was nice and not to salty. The beef and scallop dish was served on a fajita style skillet and came with a thicker sauce that is perfect on rice. It was more like a gravy and I really liked cleaning up any extra sauce on my plate with a little rice 4 dessert. Normally some fried banana stuff but today the substitute was fried apples covered in a light batter and caramel. It was such a surprise to me. I'm not normally a dessert guy. Would almost always pass on dessert for another steak or pork chop, but I'm very glad I had the dessert I actually ate 3-4 pieces. Those were the items in the meal plan. To balance it all out we also ordered some bok choy in garlic sauce. Gotta have your greens. The service was excellent. Never got below 1/3 of the cup before water was refilled. I'm not sure how many more chances I'll get to visit new Peking because I'm only in town got work, but I highly recommend this place. Try something new here. It's not like your other typical fast food Chinese carryout joints.

My wife and I thought we'd give this place a shot based on their 4 star rating. This place is way overrated. Panda Express puts this place to shame. Heck, instant Chinese food from walmart puts this restaurant to shame. We ordered 2 traditional dishes- combo kung pao and vegetable deluxe with garlic brown sauce. No distinct flavor in either dishes. I take that back, if it weren't for the minced garlic in the vegetable dish we wouldn't have been able to distinguish between the two dishes. Actually, the kung pao had a weird sour/tangy flavor which made me imagine what cat might taste like if it were cooked as a dish. There was too much sauce. When the food arrived and we looked at it we immediately felt regret in picking this place for dinner. As mentioned earlier the kung pao dish tasted sour and the peanuts tasted old and bitter. The flavor of the vegetable dish was overpowered by canned bamboo shoot brine and un-rinsed water chestnuts. My wife requested some hot chili oil because she likes spice and thought it would enhance the already bland flavor of the dish. Boy oh boy we were wrong. Even the oil in the chili oil tasted OLD and bitter. Even the fortune cookies we recieved with our bill tasted stale and old! However, the service was friendly, but nothing really remarkable. oh wait the rice was good, but how hard is it to get that wrong? Steer clear of this joint. Avoid at all costs. Would not eat even if it was offered for free. Better off eating Panda Express or Mcdonalds or microwaveable Chinese.

Don't let the drab decor and hole-in-the-wall style interior fool you - this is a great place for Chinese food in KC. In fact, they service Korean-Chinese food as well, which is prett hard to find anywhere. Everyone knows that the hole-in-the-wall places always serve the best food. I'd recommend looking on their "authentic" menu to find the hidden gems. We ordered the Seafood Soup with Egg White and Vegetables - this is a tasty, hearty soup that reminds me of home-cooked soups I'd ask for when I was traveling in cold weather in China. There was some ginger in it, and generous chunks of fish, crab and shrimps, with some mushrooms and egg. So tasty, even on a warm day, and great for when you're feeling under the weather! We also ordered the Kun Pun Gi (kun punggi) and Duck with onions and hoisin sauce. The Kun pun gi is one of my favorites - a Korean-Chinese dish that is lightly battered and fried chicken pieces in a light sauce with onions and some hot peppers. Not too spicy, but crispy and delicious! The sauce complements it well, and reminds me of the tasty BonChon and Kyo Chon fried chicken places that are so common in LA and NYC (that I miss so much!) If you like duck, go for the duck with onions/veg and hoisin sauce - generous duck sliced so thin with tons of veggies! I also would recommend the San Sham Champpon (which is a hearty, spicy Korean-style Chinese food soup, with fish and shellfish). I recommend this when the weather gets cold! Also, they make a black bean and noodles dish, Jajangmyeon, which is not on their menu, but which is one of my personal favorites. Served to single people on Valentine's Day, it is tasty on a cold day. The service here was prompt and friendly. The waitstaff looked a little frantic and were running all over the place, but they got the job done! Overall, it's a hole-in-the-wall place, so don't expect super-clean or decedent decor, but come for the tasty food and good service, and leave with a full and happy belly!

Excellent food and service
(4)Spencer S.
Don't assume anything from it's location in an outdated strip-mall. New Peking is spacious, fairly nice inside (albeit a bit outdated), and the food and service is great. I was a fan of the portion sizes, well-trained and attentive staff, and the food. If the location could be a bit nicer and if the drinks would be done a little better, I'd give it a 5-star rating for sure. Definitely worth checking out!
(4)Azile Y.
Order the peking short ribs and the pork and taro hot pot. Omg so good. Great service too.
(4)Sara D.
I live in a new area of town now, so I have to try all the Chinese restaurants in the area. New Peking had a huge menu with practically endless options for an entree. Based on our servers recommendation, I ordered the honey-orange chicken. The dish was very sweet (which is good) and came in an enormous portions. I was dining with two guys, and none of us were able to finish our dishes because the portions are so large. There were a few minor issues with us receiving dirty utensils and with 2 of us getting our food while the other waited a very long time afterwards for his. I would be willing to try New Peking out again.
(4)Maria T.
Authentic! Non of that Bo Ling's "authentic" crap they claim to be. New Peking is what I would consider true Chinese food. Located in the heart of Westport right next to one of my favorite Mediterranean eateries, Bread for All (this review to come!). I've been here several times, not nearly enough as I should, but it's not the best for my diet either. It's exterior and interior decor does no justice at all. Upon entering, their's a large lobby-like area with a front desk with a big round chair in the middle for guests to sit on. It almost looks like the chair use to be a water fountain? Anywho, the decor is old and authentic it feels like you're walking about into the 80s. You could tell they haven't done much upgrade but it doesn't matter because their food is awesome! My friend and I needed a quick bite after a long BUT fun bridal inaugural open house at arrowhead stadium. She had a $10 coupon off at New Peking so we thought why not? I love me some Chinese food. We had to spend a minimum of $20+ to receive $10 off which seemed doable. We started off with some Egg drop soup....yum! If you haven't had egg drop soup from here I recommend it! It's not your average dark yellow looking soup. It was clear with egg white remnants along with greens, mushrooms, etc. It was Egg drop soup with a twist. We then followed that with an appetizer, the Seafood Rolls. A great deal by the way, $6.25 for roughly 10 pieces?! What a steal! The seafood roll had crab meat, scallops, fish, shrimp all wrapped in tofu skin. Ok it may not sound appetizing but it was sure delicious! It would have been better if it came with some type of sauce, but not to worry...that is what soy sauce is for. The appetizer came with some pickled vegetables for the side which had a nice sour/crunchy texture. Delicious rendition to our already yummy roll. By the way it came out fresh and hot! Since I had been here several times before I suggested we order 1 entree and share because their portions will feed a family of 4, literally no joke! You're getting a great deal at this place. My friend was reluctant, as we are all human your eyes want more than you can handle. Luckily she agreed and we stuck with 1 entree and that was the Combination Egg Foo Young. It came out and we had thought we ordered large asian pizza....the thing was massive! Definitely a good call to order 1 entree and share. We were given a bowl of rice to go with it. Needless to say we both enjoyed it very much. The egg was fluffy and flavorful, it tasted very similar to mom's eggs so it brought me back to home cooking. The portion among shrimp, chicken and beef were just right. Not too much of 1 or the other. The flavors weren't salty at all, if anything it could have used just a tad bit more salt. But like I said earlier, nothing that soy sauce couldn't fix! By the time our stomachs told us to stop eating (trust me it was too good to stop) it had looked like we barely touched our meal, that's how big it was. We took the rest of it home, half'd it and I still had plenty left over for 2 meals. This place could have been 5 stars but the service was not worthy enough to receive the 5th star. It was mediocre, our waiter was very nice but he couldn't answer a lot of our questions and he looked like just a young kid. Also there was no one at the front desk so we weren't sure if it was seat yourself or wait to be seated. Anyways, I would for sure come back for great food! It's a great family place to share large entrees with!

Short Version: Carryout can be good, dining in is terrible. Avoid crab entrees unless you like paying real crab prices for fake crab. There are better authentic Chinese Restaurants in town like ABC Cafe. Long Version: The first few times I ate at New Peking I had carry-out orders. I'm new to the area, so I was happy to find my first good Chinese restaurant nearby after a bad experience with China Tom's. At first, I thought New Peking's food was pretty good. I had ordered a duck dish the first time, and the House Chicken another time. I liked the duck dish at the time, though it is incredibly fatty meat and a greasy dish, so I don't think I'll order it again. The House Chicken is awesome, but not if you don't like a landslide of sauce. Their crab rangoon are good, nothing special. The Vietnamese Spring Rolls are the same, though the pork is a little chewy so I recommend ordering them without pork. My review would have been maybe four stars until we actually went in to eat at the restaurant. The atmosphere of the restaurant is definitely dingy. I don't know what it is about privately owned Chinese restaurants that so many of them lack atmosphere or basic cleanliness, but not all of them do, so the ones who do need to step their game up. If you go there, prepare for a rather claustrophobic dining experience that feels like sitting in a school bus that's been decorated by Asian garage sale items. Prepare to see cardboard boxes of food products all over the place, half-hidden or out in plain sight. Prepare for ugly white-out and handwritten menu edits. Our dining experience was pretty bad when I ate at the restaurant. The dingy atmosphere with grubby textured lacquer on everything and paint rubbing off of surfaces set the stage for what our meal would be like. We ordered an incredibly overpriced pot of tea that tasted like sink water. Do not order the Dong Ding oolong, "Tea fit for an Emperor", as they put it. If I were an Emperor, I'd have them banished for serving me this tea. Don't order tea there, for that matter. They'll serve it to you in a Franken-tea-pot that looks to be a combination of pieces from several teapots & tea infuser cups... full of tea stains, not properly cared for, and here's the kicker... They give you plastic cups to drink your tea in. These same plastic cups, I imagine, are washed in the same dishwashers as all the other dishes, and anyone who knows a thing about plastic-ware knows that they absorb all the wonderful greasy odors and tastes of other foods when washed together, and the taste of soap or dirty sink water. Ugg. The cup I got had some splotches and didn't even look clean and there were fuzzy pieces of dust in the bottom of my teacup. I tried my hardest to drink a couple cups of tea since I'm a real tea lover but I just couldn't. I don't know where they are getting their Dong Ding Oolong because I've had many versions of it and this was by far the most awful I've ever had. WAY overpriced. Our server was slow. Our appetizer came to us tepid and before our tea. As the server brought it we were told our sauces for the appetizer and our tea would be right out. Another 5 or so minutes of us salivating as we watched our sauceless appetizer go cold while waiting for the sauce... and the sauces served to us were clearly straight out of a refrigerator, even colder. By the time our entree came I felt so put off by the dish-water tasting tea, the tepid appetizer, and the claustrophobic and loud dining environment that I barely touched our entree, which was a Sizzling Plate Seafood Combination. It did come with a sizzling iron plate, which the food had not been heated or prepared on. The server simply dumped the food onto so it would sizzle for a moment as it was served to us. However, it seemed our food had been ready long ago and even after it sizzled on the plate for a moment, it was tepid on the top. I was extremely disappointed to see the crab (advertised on the menu as CRAB, not imitation crab, not surimi) was fake. This is a huge foul to me, especially when you've got Authentic Chinese restaurants like ABC Cafe in town where when you order crab you get real crab. The entree was expensive, more expensive than an entire soft-shell crab at ABC cafe, so to be served imitation crab (FISH) was unacceptable. The rice was also served in a plastic tub that made it taste oddly like dishwasher. Ew. Never dine-in here. Just save yourself the humiliation. I started to feel sick and left in a rush after dining there. Oddly, because my first few experiences with carry out were pretty good, I may eat here again in a pinch, but only for carry out orders, never again in the restaurant. It's hard for me not to let my one bad experience ruin New Peking for me. Really hard. I'm definitely skeptical of the food from here on out and will be a lot more critical of the takeout I get. My advice for New Peking: Clean up the atmosphere and those nasty dishes. Don't serve drinks or food in plastic

Hubby and I have have been to this establishment a handful of times and never leave disappointed. Only thing I don't particularly like is the prices but considering the quality of food it's reasonable. The staff is super friendly, precise, and efficient. My husband actually did oil changes for the owner when working for Jiffy Lube & that's what brought us here the first time. The crab rangoon here is to die for! Love the sweet & sour sauce that comes with it. My favorite dishes thus far has been the beef lo mein noodles & the general tso's chicken! MMMMMM! MMMM! Portions could at least feed 2. They bring out your main dish whether it be your general's chicken or whatever you choose to order on a plate on it's own & then comes your rice, veggies on the side. Plenty of delictable chinese food for your hearts desire and even some left for lunch the next day or a midnight snack. Food is always fresh, made to order & never disappointed! Need to revisit soon.

It's okay to satisfy the Asian taste. My meal was shrimp chow mien and it was hot when served. However, would I return, no.

Got take out. Excellent beef & broccoli, and egg drop soup. Our crab Rangoon was not fresh, it looked tasted like it was hours old. Overall, pretty decent for the price.

Throw a rock and you can find a decent Chinese restaurant but New Peking Chinese Restaurant (off Westport and Mill Street) does it right. First things first, the soy sauce. Soy sauce is an important component to any Chinese restaurant so I was impressed with the presentation. No greasy Kikkoman jar here, we're talking a real glass container - with a fancy top. Classy! My appetizer was New Peking's Wonton Soup. This soup is a must-have when you go. Amongst the broth are large mushrooms, fresh spinach and two large wontons filled with some type of creamy goodness. Good to the last drop. Next up, the Shrimp and Vegetable entree. All the entrees here are huge, so I was impressed at first sight. The flavors are very fresh tasting and the sauce was light with a touch of garlic. I didn't get the usual heavy, greasy feeling you get after eating Chinese. The Sizzling Beef and Scallops entree was also delicious. The beef was decent, the scallops were good and the sauce was excellent. My meal at New Peking consisted of two soups, two entrees and a couple shots of soy sauce for $30. That's a helluva deal.

For the most part the food is good, been there several times. Last week about 2:00-3:00, I called in a order, this was the worse I ever had, it was dry, even the noodles where not mixed well, well maybe they had just had a big crowd of high school students, I come at lease 2 to 3 times a month. Usually I look forward to coming, disappointed phi tai noodles

New Peking Chinese Restaurant was a small place that had good food. The parking lot was small so parking on the street might be an alternate option. I met a bunch of others here for dinner and we pretty much filled up half of the restaurants seating and tables. There were maybe fourteen of us in the backroom and we had to join three tables together. I ordered the Sizzling Beef in Black Pepper Sauce ($12.95) while everybody else ordered their own thing. We decided to do family style and share everybody's dish. It took awhile for our food to come out but that was probably because there were so many of us. I don't know the names of all the dishes that were ordered but they all tasted good. The Sizzling Beef in Black Pepper Sauce was pretty good and went well with everything I ate. I took a picture of every dish we had at our table. I was too hungry to get up and take pictures of the other tables' food. lol Almost everything was finished which was a good indication that everybody else at the table thought the food was good. Overall, I thought this restaurant had good food. I recommend it!

Their food is always excellent. Love the House Beef. In all the years I've been going to New Peking I've never been disappointed.

I may only be 16 but I know when food is good. Being a teenager I love food and Asian food is close to the heart me being vietnamese. I defiantly recommend going here if you've never been and tell your waiter what you like in terms of taste and texture and it should help you decide want you want :) I also highly highly recommend peking jumbo shrimp if you like sweet slightly sour and a hint if spice. It's incredibly delicious with their rice. very ideal for someone maybe just wanting to get into the spicy scene it's good for beginners. My only regret is not asking for the recipe on the peking jumbo shrimp:(

New Peking was a pretty standard Chinese meal, I got the generals chicken, which of course is a pretty standard dish. There was quite a bit of sauce as most places have a lot of sauce on this dish. The egg rolls were good. The only weird part was the egg drop soup had mushrooms and tofu and was a really pale color. Maybe I misunderstood the waitress and it actually wasn't egg drop soup? Not sure... With so many other oriental choices in midtown/westport I'm not sure I'll be back to New Peking soon, not because I had a bad experience but just because I feel I can easily find something a little more exciting. Course, I ordered Generals chicken, how lame is that? The do have a parking lot so that is nice.

This is, hands down, my favorite Chinese joint in all of KC. Unassuming from the outside and in, it has super large portions and great food. The staff is quick and friendly as well. I can't reccomend this place enough. Pick up some chop sticks and get there!
(5)Matt H.
In a city full of one and two star Chinese restaurants, this is a three star Chinese restaurant. Which is to say that while it isn't particularly great, and isn't bad at all, it's about as good as it gets in Kansas City if you're looking for some Chinese food. Having lived in the DC area and experienced amazing high-brow Chinese and amazing low-brow Chinese, and then living in a relatively small town in West Virginia that strangely enough also had some great Chinese options, I'm sad to say that I just haven't found anything really good here in Kansas City. And I really like my Chinese food. New Peking does a decent rendition of your Chinese food favorites. I've not had anything here that was really bad, but nothing has really knocked my socks off, either. I've eaten in the dining room once and the experience was generally good: service was reasonably quick, waitress was friendly and did her job well. I've also had takeout a few times, and the wait time is about what you'd expect. It seems to always be pretty empty when I've been here, either dining in or just grabbing a carry out order. They also have a few unique and interesting dishes on the menu that are likewise decent. All in all, this is the best Chinese food I've found in town so far, and it's still only a three star joint.

Oh alright, after a really good dinner there last night I must say that they should get 5 stars as much as many of the other places I have given that many to! The interior has been updated and looks nice! Not the most important thing to me but everything helps. Unlike many restaurants these days, the crab rangoon I ordered were actually the normal size you'd expect them to be. Not these tiny little micro crab rangoons that many places must think it is cute to serve to their customers. I had the kung pao beef and it was plenty good! I usually get the house beef, which is also very tasty, but wanted to try something new. I think they decreased the size of the portions a little bit, which in their case is actually a GOOD thing. You still get too much food but now you don't get a gigantic oval-shaped mountain like you used to and I appreciate that! Unlike many other restaurants too, they haven't raised their prices a lot either, which I REALLY appreciate. I don't eat a lot of Chinese food these days so as I said in my previous review I don't come here as often, however I would definitely recommend giving the place a try!
(5)Teresa T.
True Chinese food! Exceptional peking duck and the fried rice is amazing. You must put their house hot mustard sauce on it. If you're looking for REAL chinese food - not some asian american fast food - then this is the place you need to come to. The dining area is small but you can guarantee that you will get served with a great smile and amazing food.
(5)Allison M.
Best chinese food in Kansas City! I have been coming to this place for many years and both the service and food are always excellent. The portions are huge, so expect to bring home leftovers unless you are splitting your dish! They also recently remodeled the inside so the interior looks a lot nicer as well. I love their honey chicken, pad thai and the tofu chow mein is AWESOME. And best crab rangoon, hands down.

This is an Americanized Chinese restaurant. I had a groupon, and they treated it liberally. I ordered crab ragoon, an entree with chicken, shrimp, scallops, mushrooms, and water chestnuts with a white sauce. The entree was called Three Ingredients. When you order at the table, and dine in, you get a hugemongously amount of food portions. I ordered crab ragoon, which I found tasty and filling. The crab is prevelent, as is the cream cheese. It is non greasy, and crunchy. I can normally make a meal out of crab ragoon. I could out of these. I think I will one day. The entree I ordered, Three Ingredients, was just okay. I would give this review 5 stars, if they improved their white sauce.I was hoping the sauce would be more like walnut shrimp sauce at other restaurants. That is the only thing that knocked this down a star. The chicken was tasty, but not as seasoned as I wanted it to be. I probably should've ordered orange chicken. I saw the other table eating orange chicken and that is what I'll order next. The scallops were large, and okay, but again, a different sauce would've spiffied this up. The mushrooms were cut so cute that I hated to eat them. It looked like the caps had been scalloped around the stems. They bring you a huge pot of white rice. As large as the pan I often make for my family-2 quarts. Seriously,I have enough for left for 3 meals. The hot tea, isn't jasmine tea, which I was counting on. It tasted like Lipton tea. But nonetheless. They bring it in a cute silver pot,and there's alot of servings. I ordered orange chicken to go, for the Other R. If I had ordered it at the table, it would've been double the amount, and double the amount of rice also. They pack up their to go food in a black plastic plate with a clear lid. Looks like there's quite a bit there. I liked the restaurant, the service, and the food. Just didn't care for the entree I bought. That doesn't mean I'll not be back. I intend to.

Will I be back? No way Jose! I've been here 3 times. The first two, I ordered from the Authentic Menu and this time I ordered from the lunch menu, which seemed rather Americanized. I ordered the General Tso with white meat, veggie spring roll, white fried rice and hot and sour soup. My wife ordered the Kung Pau Chicken. We also ordered hot tea. Interestingly, on the menu, both had that spicy symbol next to it. We like spicy food. What did we get? SUPER BLAND food. Huge portions for the price, but kind of gross. In order to make the General Tso barely edible, I had to drown it in hot mustard. The white fried rice was decent, but had little flavor. The sweet sauce they put on the table was super liquidity and gross to put on the rice. The veggie spring roll tasted like it was stuck in the fryer way too long. The hot and sour soup was also bland. How was the service? Well, when the waitress came by, they gave us excellent service. However, after we got our meals, it was probably 30 minutes plus before they came back to ask if everything was alright, etc. Do you want a doggie bag for that? No, it wasn't fit enough for Colt to eat. Well, perhaps it was, but he's on a diet LOL

Was thinking about driving across KC To a bigger name. Glad we didn't everything was great.
(5)Jessica M.
It was just ok I guess. I don't know, I feel weird not being able to give it more than 3 stars. It's definitely in need of some updates. The mood of the restaurant kind of took away from the food. The food wasn't even that spectacular. We had the wonton soup to start which honestly was like water soup with some soft wontons in it. I don't know, it just didn't have much to it. I wish we would have gotten the hot and sour which I'm sure would have been fine. I also made the mistake of getting the house vegetable trying to be healthy. Probably won't do that again. I can't remember what my husband ordered. I'm sure that if we were to return we would like it if we got something better. For me, the price is a little too much though for just the atmosphere alone.

To find a restaurant that my dad, his best friend, and I all three like is nothing short of a miracle. When my dad asked me to take him to a KC place with a good reputation, (ie good Yelp reviews!) I was at a loss. A quick search reminded me of New Peking Chinese. I had been here twice before for lunch and always had a great experience and the perfect amount of food, but never had dinner. I had no idea what to expect because I knew there would be a different style of menu from the lunchtime options. We almost tried the 3-4 course Tasting Menu-appetizers/soup, entrees, and dessert for $18-$25 per person-but opted to order from the regular menu. That said, I definitely think this would be a good option if you have never been here before and want to try a variety of menu items. For our meals, we chose the Sweet and Sour Chicken, the Combination Lo Mein, and the Cashew Chicken. As an appetizer, we shared Spring Rolls and Egg Rolls. Of the two appetizers, the Egg Rolls were the clear favorite. The Spring Roll sauce was delicious, but my dad and his friend just could not get into the Spring Rolls themselves. The Entrees were Gigantic. Seriously. We took home portions of all three and of the pot of rice they brought us. The only downfall was not getting an Eggroll or Crab Rangoon with our meal like the lunch special, but when each entree has enough food to to feed a family of five, that extra bit would be overkill. Each meal had huge portions of ingredients-a ton of broccoli or huge slices of peppers-including the lo-mein. The amount of shrimp in the Lo Mein shocked me-most places charge extra for that amount of seafood. Since our visit there a few weeks ago, my dad has mentioned how great the food was a few different times over the phone. With food and service that is well above average, I have to agree with him and recommend it to locals and visitors a like.

Good food. Just a great vibe at this place. Lots of people have come to appreciate the food they make. Highly recommend if you're up for Chinese.

The Best Chinese food I've had in K.C. Large portion sizes for the money! I'm talking eat till ya have to waddle out of the restaurant while holding a doggie bag with leftovers for tomorrow :) They also have groupons and google offers that make the place unbeatable in value! So far i really like the orange and honey chicken with mien noodles, terrific egg drop soup, well cooked duck, as well as proper fried rice! The wait staff is also hard to beat, they seem very hard working and attentive as well as very knowledgeable about their menu. HINT: They frequently have Groupons and Google Offers that make the place unbeatable in value!

How is "New" in the title of this business, the more appropriate name would be "The Old Beat Up Peking Chinese Restaurant". This place has soda and ice cream coolers in the lobby. This place has the lighting of a cafeteria style buffet restaurant. This place is beat-up and worn down. It probably didn't help that I was seated next to the scratched up squeaky kitchen door, oh ambiance! The food was ok. The egg rolls didn't seem to made in house. The entree was huge, but I didn't want to eat more than half of it. The price is extremely high for the quality of food that I received. The waitress was very friendly, but awkward and not very knowledgeable. After reading the other reviews, I was expecting a much better experience. Very disappointed.

For now it's a definite 3 stars. I have been twice and enjoyed my hubby's dishes over mine. The first dish I had was more like sweet and sour pork than the hot braised pork listed on the menu. Plus the Crab Rangoon, which is highly recommended, was dry and very oily. The second visit was on Christmas Day. It was packed which was expected. I didn't mind sitting in a smaller dining room as the one of the two tables not related to the entire room. It was fun to guess who was actually married to whom, which kid belonged to which person, etc. It was more the merrier attitude. As for my food, this time I ordered a cup of hot and sour soup and an entree of Duck with Ginger and Onion in Hoisin Sauce. The hot and sour soup was not hot (spicy or temperature) or sour. It was cold and quite bland. Oh well...moving on to my dish. I asked the waitress to up the spicy as it was already marked spicy. Nope. I ended up using the entire bottle of chili sauce on the dish. Overall, it was good If you're into duck. The portion of duck was huge and plenty for leftovers. Next time, it will be my third time and it's usually the charm, right? Maybe I will have my hubby order my entree since I end up really liking his. Maybe I will close my eyes and randomly pick something. Either way, I hope I can up this to 4 stars.

They now have a web site at newpekingkansas.com/defa… . Also they have combined the regular menu and the traditional menu, with the traditional pages at the end of the combined menu. The result is many choices. The restaurant leans towards Cantonese and other mildly spiced styles. But there are some spicier options. New Peking is open on all holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even on Christmas eve. The parking could not be easier, with a lot at the front door.
(4)Courtney L.
Pretty good, but not awesome. However their shrimp fried rice has huge pieces of shrimp and nice pieces of egg. And their Vietnamese spring rolls are actually nive and light. Peanut sauce is not good though. Not saucy at all. It has the consistency of icing. Overall, decent Chinese food but I have had better

My wife and I initially visited New Peking after getting a groupon deal on it. We had just moved to KC and were struggling to find a decent Chinese restaurant, and they did not disappoint. When you walk in, it looks like your usual kitschy chinese restaurant, very old school chinatown. I was worried this may be a bad sign. When we were greeted we found the staff very friendly, something else that seemed like a bad sign. My usual experience in NYC and Chicago's Chinatown was that poor service and questionable tenderness equals good real Chinese food. When we were ordered, we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. From what I can recall, the serving size were decent. That came as a shocker, who new that you could get good food and good service in a Chinese restaurant, solid job KC! We give New Peking 5 stars, will be back next time we're craving Chinese.
(5)Anush J.
This is my second time here. The first time was not very impressive. But heard good things about this place from a friend and decide to give it a second shot. There were lots of items on the menu but most of them seem to be standard Chinese fare. So I ended up ordering a house beef dish asking for it to be spicy. It was more sweet than it was spicy. I then proceeded to ask for hot sauce - I have had much much better hot sauce in almost every other Chinese restaurant. Will probably never return again.
(2)Lauren F.
I can always depend on a few of my favorite items to be consistently delicious. I like that the recipe is the same and I can alway count on their flavor when i crave it. I have never eaten at the restaurant only have had to go orders. The customer service at the front is always warm and welcoming.
(4)T N.
I been here many times with my family. I love the General Tao's chicken, Chow Fun(Traditional menu I think), and the Fried rice is just right. Our company has brought us here for year end dinners as well and they served an 8 course meal but the lobster dish and seafood soup stuck with me the most. We had another experience last week when they catered my father in laws 70th birthday. I didn't know my brother in law had got them to cater it. They were professional and very clean and cautious with everything as they brought it out and prepped it. Presentation was just like at their restaurant. I guess they asked what exact time the guests needed to be served and they arrived 15 minutes earlier to unload and get the prepared dishes out to us. Overall, each one of my experiences was very positive. I usually get headaches when places put MSG in the food, I don't recall any headaches after my experiences with with New Peking.
(5)A. K.
Honestly, I just got home and am washing my mouth out with a single-malt scotch on the rocks. Let me start by saying we had some high expectations of the New Peking as a Chinese friend of mine suggested we try the restaurant. Short review, water comes out with rice floating in the bottom, rice comes out with a dark black hair. Place looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years, I don't mind that, but when the food and drink looks like the decor the kitchen must be equally disgusting. I can't even review the food because when I saw the hair, we stopped eating. As Napolean Dynamite said, "Grrrosss." My wife and I will not be returning.

Wow! I totally did not expect this place to be so great! I figured it was just your typical American Chinese Restaurant....but if you order from the Chinese Menu, this place tastes like it belongs in Seattle's Chinatown! My bf and I bought a Groupon where we each got an order of soup and could select 2 entrees up to $12.95 each....what a great deal! I have to buy another one of those if Groupon offers it again! So I decided to get the Hot an Sour soup....pretty tasty! My bf got the Wonton soup and he really liked it too! I decided to get the Eight Treasures Bean Curd Hot Pot.....tastes just like in Seattle! It is a hot pot that is filled with barbeque pork, chicken, scallops, squid, shrimp, mushrooms, baby bok choy, and fried bean curds with a brown sauce. YUM! My bf decided to get the sizzling hot plat of spareribs and onions in a black pepper sauce. That tasted awesome too! You definitely have to share these dishes family style and we both ended up taking home over half of what we ordered! This place definitely fills the void of good Chinese food in Kansas City! Just wish that I had discovered this place sooner! I will definitely be back! Pros: - very delicious food - tons of food, be ready to have to go boxes after your meal! - lots of booths to sit in Cons: - this place is a little pricey compared to Seattle's Chinatown.....but this is the best place in KC for real Chinese food so far! Why I gave it a 4..... Delicious Chinese Food that is awesome! The Groupon is a great deal as well! I will definitely be back to try more tasty food here.....love it!
(4)Chad S.
Even though Chinese food is not my favorite cuisine, this place has some of the best I've had since moving back to KC. I've been here three times in the last year or so and, for the right reason (i.e., another Groupon or Christmas when they're one of the few places that are open), I would certainly go back. Do yourself a favor and order from the back part of the menu, aka the Chinese menu ... that's where the best stuff is. Yes, it is a little annoying when the wait staff asks you if you understand what you're ordering (I do understand that spicy kidney is actually kidney), and that they are somewhat amazed that you like it, but give me some pork stomach with hot spicy jalapeno or beef tendon and Chinese vegetable anytime. Especially over the "Chinese" dishes on the front part of the menu. I will probably never be a "regular" at New Peking (or any Chinese restaurant). It's just a food style that I want only every so often. But when the mood hits, it will be one of the top ones on my list.

no reservations at 9pm on a Saturday and we thought we were sunk...nope! stopped in for carry out at new Peking and loved it. the dinner portions are enough to share or make 2-3 more meals. my husband got the house beef and I the chicken with asparagus. the veggies were fresh and all around great dishes!
(5)Jordan W.
Meets and possibly exceeds Bo Ling's for title of best Chinese in KC. Fresh and huge portions of most chicken dishes (which are $10 or less). Highly recommended and worth the drive from Johnson Co.
(5)Alan L.
Some dishes are good and others not so much.

Our favorite Chinese restaurant! There are two menus - "American" Chinese and "Authentic" Chinese - we always go for the genuine stuff. Portions are very, very large (my boyfriend & I can easily split a dish) and prices very reasonable considering all you get. Our favorites? Kimchi (with extra sauce), peanut sauce (to accompany the spring rolls, yes they will make them without pork if you ask), Salty fish & eggplant hot pot, pork intestine hot pot and traditional Korean spicy seafood soup. They have what feels like a million dishes and we always try something new. There aren't a lot of descriptions with the menu items though so you kind of take a risk (which is half the fun!), never walk away disappointed. Staff is sweet and attentive. In fact, we needed a late dinner last night and they accommodated our 9:50pm carry-out order with smiles all around. Once the hostess figured out we liked the authentic dishes, he recommended their Chinese hot pot service. You get a list of veggies and protein and pick everything you want in it (similar to a sushi sheet). He promised it's an unforgettable experience - and I can imagine with ingredients like pork blood, jew's ear and tofu skin. Bottom line, if you're in the Westport area, have a hankering for piping hot Chinese food, check them out and order off the real menu ;)
(5)Amy S.
Service is good. A bit slow, but friendly. Pretty standard American Chinese fare. I tried broccoli beef, cashew chicken, dumpling soup, and appetizers of crab rangoon, chicken legs, and spring rolls. The rangoon was hugely disappointing - all cream cheese, no crab or onion. The spring rolls are average. The dumpling soup was fantastic - the best part of my meal. The entrées themselves were good but unremarkable. The texture of the beef and chicken were both very soft, and there was a lot of heavy sauce on each. Almost like gravy. The vegetables are crisp, though, and clearly fresh. I will be sure to go back and try something from their Chinese menu, because the American-Chinese dishes were pretty boring.
(3)Deandra A.
I love New Peking. The prices are good, the portions are great. The food is excellent and always comes out hot. I really love the duck with onion in ginger hoisin sauce. The drinks are strong, which is good. Service is always good.
(4)Matt M.
My coworkers and I may rarely dine in, but we always order carry out! I love the crab rangoon and the portions of combination lo mein are huge. I usually end up getting two meals out of one serving.

How should I start this review? Oh yes. It was Christmas Day. It was quite the eventful day. My car's MPEM.. ICU.. what ever was busted, so I had the lovely pleasure of staying in Kansas City for the holidays. My roomie stuck around as well because she decided to work. As it is with every major holiday, everything is closed. We both hadn't eaten lunch and by now it was almost dinner time. We figured we'd make a run for the border (KS/MO that is) and see if anything was open. We had a suspicion that places in Westport would be open by now because the one thing that stays faithfully open during the holidays is a bar. When we finally arrive to the Westport area though, it was still something of a ghost town. There were a few pedestrians probably in the same bind as us -- starving, frustrated, and cold. While browsing around, we saw there were quite a few cars in the New Peking Chinese's parking lot. DUH!!! Of course a Chinese restaurant would be open during the holidays. We pulled up their menu on our phones and skimmed it. Did it have weird items most Chinese take-outs would NOT offer? The answer was YES. This was our place! There was probably about a 20 minute wait for us two. The look of the place was your typical, older Chinese restaurant. There were booths, wobbly tables, and carpet. I don't know what it is about carpet in restaurants, but I am not a fan. At any rate, we were ready for some food and by this point, some drinks as well. I ordered a dirty martini and my friend Tina ordered a strawberry daiquiri. If I have learned anything, it is this. Unless your Chinese restaurant has a bar area that patrons can sit at, DO NOT. DO NOT. DO NOT ORDER COCKTAILS here. For one, our drinks took forever to come out. I work in a bar, so I can totally empathize, but this was ridiculous. It's bad when our appetizers come out before our drinks. My dirty martini was not good. It tasted watered down and probably had wayyy too much vermouth (I hope that was vermouth). Tina's daiquiri tasted like a slurpee from 7-11. Haha. She said she didn't taste any alcohol in it which I didn't doubt after getting my drink. I should've gotten a beer. The food was a different story (thankfully). We ordered crispy fried pork intestines, ma po tofu, and duck with ginger and onion in hoisin sauce. Everything was delicious. Tina and I practically inhaled our food. It probably didn't hurt that we hadn't eaten all day. The portions were great, so we had some leftovers to take home. The fried intestines were thinly sliced so it was easier to chew and it came with a hoisin-ish dipping sauce. It was good. I will always order ma po tofu anywhere it is offered. You can't really go wrong. It's cubed soft tofu in a thicker gravy sauce with minced pork meat. AMAZING STUFF!!! The duck was prepared in a way we didn't expect it though. Generally, duck is served nearly whole and the sauce is on the side. This dish was more of a stirfry. It was good but I probably won't be ordering it again from there. The duck was a little tougher than I would've liked, and it was stir-fried with carrots, snap peas, onions, and hoisin. I'm a little partial to having my duck steamed, so I guess that's what I was expecting. Overall, New Peking Chinese Restaurant was a solid place. No more drinks from there but I'll definitely go back to try the rest of the menu. The prices were reasonable and the portions were good. The food came out pretty quickly for it being pretty busy that evening. And for the most part everything tasted good. That's why I still gave this place 4 stars. If you decide to check out this place, don't be afraid to order some of the non-standard fare. It may be one of the best things you end up ordering there.

I went to this restaurant last week with a few friends. We were immediately greeted by "that friendly guy at the counter". He promptly took us to a table and showed us the awsome menu which has everything from Korean to Thai. So not only can you get great Chinese food here, but apparently you can also order Korean and Thai dishes! How awsome is that??!! We ordered three dishes and two appetizers and got all of our food on the table in less than 10 mins. The taste is unrivaled for a Chinese restaurant in KC and the service is definitely top notch. I'm wish more people would skip those less-than-stellar Chinese buffet restaurants and come to a place like this where people pay attention to the quality while also won't short change you on quantity.

Best General Tso's chicken I have ever had. Crispy and not all just dough but big chunks of chicken. The Egg Rolls were amazing and so were the Pork Dumplings. There were 3 of us and we split two orders of General Tso's, the dumplings and egg rolls. The General Tso's comes with a huge bowl of rice white or fried you pick what you want. We had enough left overs to fill two take out containers. The staff was awesome and fast. Our waiter was friendly and joking with us and we had a great time talking with him. He kept our glasses full and checked on us often. I think we have found our new go to Chinese Restaurant.

I love a good surprise (when it comes to restaurants at least). Went in here expecting run-of-the-mill food. It turned out be some good stuff. I judge most Chinese restaurants by the quality of their crab Rangoon (which were average here), but the rest of the food was delectable. General Tso's and Kung Pow were both good and spicy, just the way I like it. The portions were tremendous and I had left overs for lunch for the next few days. But since the portions were large so were the prices. Next time I go I will be splitting an order with someone.

I was slightly hung over on Sunday and therefore needed Chinese food. Now, I have been in search of a good Chinese restaurant since I moved to KC in 2007. So far nothing lives up to Jade Garden in Lawrence. (Their crab rangoons are the best -- creamy and slightly sweet.) I read some reviews about New Peking on Yelp, of course, and thought I would try it out. I got there about 6:40 PM, and it was busy! I thought that was a good sign. I ordered egg drop soup, crab rangoons and the sliced duck with onions and ginger in a housin sauce to go. The man taking orders was very quick and efficient. Except then I waited and waited and waited. I finally got my food at 7:20 PM. Forty minutes! That was a long time to wait. The host was very apologetic for how long it took and did give me a free slice of cheesecake for the wait time, which was nice. On to the food: the duck was sooooo good. It was flavorable and came with lots of veggies and rice. The crab rangoons were okay. They had that overpowering onion flavor that I don't like as much. The soup was good, kinda boring but full of egg, tofu and mushrooms. Healthy, I didn't feel bad about eating it. I will definitely be going back to New Peking, but I'll probably call my order in ahead next time.

I have heard of New Peking for years and I've been to Genghis Khan and Blue Koi and other Westport venues but for some reason, I never connected mentally with this place even though I heard people speak of it over the years,. Well, I bought a Groupon for New Peking and we were looking for something quick but not Fast Food. We piled into the Caddie and high-tailed it over from the Dotte. We were greeted by a polite young man who promptly seated us and then a perky, polite young lady came and took our drink order,. We also ordered a plate of Crab Rangoon for starters and I had a bowl of Egg Drop soup,. The egg drop soup came quickly with plenty of crispy won ton noodles which were a delight. The soup was rather bland though and disappointing. The Crab Rangoon were pretty much like any other Crab Rangoon. Tasty nonetheless but nothing to write home about. I ordered asparagus beef and my dining companion had a spicy chicken and cabbage stir-fry. Both dishes were delicious and delectable and sumptuous with spices, sauce, proportion of meat to vegetable was excellent and absolutely savory and flavorful above expectations,. My asparagus beef had magnificent amounts of al dente cooked asparagus, fresh and bright green served with spicy and ample amounts of tender beef strips. It was a joy to dine on this dish and I had plenty left over for next day's lunch. My dining companion as I said, had a cocoction of cabbage, chicken and spicy sauce. I enjoyed the heat and the flavor really woke up the mouth. Both of these dishes were expertly prepared with the vegetables served well-infused with spices, warm to the touch but delightfuly crispy, with a beautiful al dente texture so many stir-fries fail to achieve. As far as atmosphere goes, the location is a bit divey but not unpleasantly so. I noticed the restaurant seemed attractive to a lot of young Asian student-types which I thought was kind of cool. They energetically gathered at several tables, sharing soup and other food, laughing and chatting in what looked to me like a fun night out with like-minded friends. I really like that. Ok. The restaurant is kind of divey, not pristine (I don't care about that...), the service was above average, the server pleasant, the host, pleasant, they paid good attention to us making sure drinks were topped off and that our needs were being met. I can't give 5 stars because the egg drop soup was blah...sorry. But the food ranks in the top of my favorite Chinese places. Excellent job on the entrées. We will definitely be going to New Peking more often, especially when we're not in the mood for cheesy buffets!

Maybe I ordered the wrong thing or they were having a bad cooking day, but this was NOT what I was expecting. I even followed all you Yelper's suggestions and got the "authentic" Chinese menu... ordered the Cantonese duck with white rice for take out. It was just so.... BLAND. I mean no flavor whatsoever. Duck is one of my favorite dishes, especially in Chinese restaurants, but this was probably the worst I have had. I thought there would be more of a sauce, or at least a heavier stock that the duck sat in. Maybe some veggies cooked in there? It's possible that I'm used to the "Americanized" chinese that's found everywhere, but I've had much better Chinese dishes in Chinatown in Boston. I'll take a stab at the americanized menu next time. Maybe all that extra fat and sauce will make this American girl happy. THE GOOD: friendly staff member at the host desk, large portions for a reasonable price

Excellent food...some of the best that I have had in a long time...food came out with 5 mins of ordering and was delicious!

Every time I come here there is a really nice, hard working guy at the front desk. He is always really nice. Tonight when I went there, less than an hour before they closed (I know, I'm a jerk), and the guy apologized and said it may take longer than usual for my food to come out and threw in two free soups. I thought that was a really nice gesture. I love their twice cooked pork and their egg rolls. I HATE egg rolls. I absolutely love theirs. I have never been dissatisfied when coming here.

I am from SF-- and I am asian foodie- with the most chinese restaurants in the US, and this place can totally compete with good place in SF. Their service is excellant. Seriously, t he portions they give -- we had TONS of leftovers. I really wish they existed when I lived here in KC... Their food is really authentic--- very fresh. And also, this place is family-owned... so please don't go to PF Changs or Bo Lings--- seriously, you 're overpaying for NON-authentic chinese food. my poor and ignorant family didn't know about this place until i heard about them catering for a wedding.. and now i have referred them ( and all my asian friends) to New Peking, they have converted from being "There's no good chinese food" to " Best Kept Secret Real Chinese Food" in Kansas City
(5)Jeff H.
There is not another Chinese restaurant in Kansas City that can offer as diverse a variety, for as bargain a price, with as authentic taste, as New Peking. They even have hot pot which I don't know of any other Chinese restaurant has - but call ahead to make sure they have it that day just to be on the safe side as it is rather seasonal. This place has two menu sets, one in English where you will find the typical fried rice, chicken this chicken that Americanized Chinese dishes; then there is the one in Chinese which contains VERY authentic Chinese dishes. "Water cooked Fish slices" is an absolute must. The owner is extremely friendly and sociable.
(5)Brent F.
The staff at this restaurant is very warm. I was quite disappointed with the Peking Duck since it lacked flavor and came with what appeared to be thin tortillas. The pork lo mein was probably the best i've had. The lunch specials are a great deal, but the entrees are nothing special.
(3)Dino D.
This place has been around for a long time in its current location, so i think it is safe to say that it provides consistent, satisfactory Americanized Chinese food. Ordered from the take out menu only. Crab Rangoon were especially good. Large portion sizes.

Got a great groupon from Restaurants.com so a few of us decided to come here. Ditto pretty much what everyone else has said; unassuming decor, a little dirty and scary when you first enter, but the food is indeed marvelous. Our server was great also, very friendly, prompt and explained every question we asked thoroughly. Beef cho cho was excellent, tender marinated beef over a little flame grill. We all had egg drop soup which was perfect; not too gloppy, not too runny, just right. Per all the other Yelpers' advice, we ordered from the traditional menu: beef and broccoli, combo Fun noodles, and Taro hotpot (unusual but delicious; try it!!). Everything was piping hot, absolutely delicious, seasoned perfectly, NO MSG (yay!) and came in massive portions. I mean HUGE: we came starving and we left stuffed carrying big take out bags. New Peking sure could use a facelift and some elbow grease, but when the food and service are that good... well, we're going again for sure. Just don't use the bathroom if you can help it. And if you HAVE to, don't say you weren't warned!

Reminds me a bit of the restaurants I love back in my hometown... They even have a few of the same dishes/similar enough at least... which I have had issues finding. You can get stir-fried sesame chicken/beef (instead of fried)... & I plan to order at some point to compare with one of the places back home... which I prefer over the fried. They also appear to serve various types of duck... I love duck... but opted to try the House Beef (cabbage, garlic, beef... one of my favs back home) for comparison purposes... not quite as sweet as back home but still very yummy & I shall return for it. The duck shall wait for a dinner date or for when my mom is in town. My husband opted for a fried chicken dish... it was ok... he liked mine better. Crab Rangoon was delicious... don't know if it was the best but I would definitely order again as I love Crab Rangoon... The restaurant is a lot more spacious then it appears out front... lots of room! And has a good atmosphere with good service. They have various teas to choose from & include descriptions of each on their tea menu.

I bought the Groupon for this hidden gem over a month ago after realizing that it was in my neighborhood. Recently, a friend and I decided to finally take the ever-so-unpredictable plunge into the unfamiliar Chinese joint. After entering the lobby, I braced myself for apparent disappointment upon review of the decor and empty dining room. But, we were led to a dining area jam-packed with what seemed to be the only diners in the restaurant. I'm not exactly sure of the purpose of the sardine seating method, but maybe they wanted us to make new friends or keep warm. Either way, we were seated in one of those booths where the table makes one side or the other suck in their rib cage to accommodate said table. That task fell upon me, but I was up for it. We had $15 to spend and we were going to stretch that puppy 'til the last bark. My companion suggested the Beef Cho Cho appetizer and the Honey Chicken. He is pickier than a five year old, and I am about as picky as a goat so our/his decision was made. Our server was very helpful but wouldn't let us split the three course meal two ways even though the menu didn't sound too forceful with its inclusion of "two or more, please". The Beef Cho Cho came out within five minutes and came with a fun little accessory. A miniature grill was lit between us. There were suspicious-looking purple rocks in the bottom of it that resembled grape-flavored rock candy. We BBQ'd our beef sticks for a minute and a taste test shot down any of my reservations about the grape rock candy. They were tender and charred and hot. Cho Cho good. We finished off the six skewers as fast as they would heat on the grill. Soon after, someone came to remove the flaming centerpiece which was none too soon as the flame was reaching concerning proportions. A few minutes later, our Honey Chicken landed. Steamed rice was separate in its own warming pot. My companion referred to it as "Jessica Alba Chicken" though she undoubtedly eats only carrot tops and romaine hearts. Regardless of the entree's name, it was scandalously sweet and light and full of chicken, not air bubbles. The perfectly steamed rice offset the crunch and sugar of the chicken nicely as it should. Leftovers were abundant and the idea of eating this a second (or even third) time was welcomed. Our omnipotent server even heeded my request for extra rice to go. Overall, excellent service, depressing decor, perfect food. So delicious even Jessica Alba would have splurged on a grain of rice.

First of all, let me say this place is an awesome value for the price. There is always enough food to take home and eat the whole next day. The traditional menu is really terrific (you have to ask them for it)...but a lot of times I just get hung up on the same thing..which I salivate for... the Pad Thai Tofu with a giant bowl of Spicy chili flakes in oil. Salivation is occuring just thinking about this. Vegetarians will find the staff accomodating to make any dish veg-friendly. The staff is very efficient and friendly at all times, whithout hovering. The downside...the bathrooms. UGH. Avoid if possible. Decor doesn't do much for the place, but hey, if it's perfect if I come in not expecting a really romantic experience.
(4)Betty I.
Great food. The combo appetizer is very unique and romantic. We also loved the tea leaf duck. The seafood hot plate was tasty but nothing to write home about. Would certainly go again to try the triple duck plate.
(4)David S.
The food here is awesome. Ok let me restart, the authentic food here is awesome. Their americanized versions of chinese food actually are only ok. But if you ask for their traditional menu (which is in English as well) you are in for a treat. The traditional menu is items that you will not expect (unless you have been to China or are of Chinese origin), but the flavor and execution of these dishes are at another level. I don't even ask for their regular menu anymore. The decor is very stereotypical chinese restaraunt, but the service is quick and effective. I am very happy to have found a good chinese restraunt so close to home.
(4)Burton A.
Food is delicious, inexpensive, and comes out in generous portions. I've eaten Chinese food in just about every major city in the United States and this is right up there with some of the best I've ever had. Great decor and great food. You won't be disappointed.

I revisited this place again with some friends after an intense racquet ball sesh so I was famished and, therefore, cannot vouch for the entire accuracy of this review. However, my last review for New Peking was kind of a flop, I think, because of what I ordered (the eggplant dish-don't do it). This time I got the chicken and vegetables in brown sauce, extra spicy, and really enjoyed what I had. I also sampled my friend's orange chicken which was also quite scrumptious (though a bit too sweet for her taste). Let it be known that I think my standards for Asian food in the area are dropping..as I still don't really believe New Peking to be really authentic of Chinese Cuisine but enjoyed it anyway. Everything is still oversauced, sometimes too salty or too sweet, and really oily..but I guess that's what's expected of Chinese food in this area. Might be the best that I can do..unfortunately, sigh.

This place is awesome. This is my favorite place to get Chinese carry out in Kansas City. I get carry out here probably once every two weeks and always get the Kung Pao Chicken. It's really easy to carry out and it's always good. They will make it as hot as you like!
(5)Sara B.
Will definitely be going back. I went with my daughter and we tried each other's food. The Teriyaki chicken and the General Tso's chicken were both delicious. The Hot and Sour soup was very good also. The waiter serving us was excellent. He kept our drinks filled and was super attentive and helpful. We didn't know what to order (some of the menu is in Chinese and only a few pictures) he was very patient explaining the items and made great recommendations. This place is easy to miss but I am really glad we went in. The ambiance is nice, yet laid back and kid friendly. The staff were all super friendly and nice. Great experience all around.
(5)Lannette G.
Try the House Beef, it's served on a bed of cabbage, it's my favorite there. Their portions are large so you can share two plates with 4 people.
(4)N R.
I haven't eaten there in a while but this was with out question the BEST CHINESE FOOD IN TOWN! I can't wait to get back there and order some carry out-like a Shrimp in Garlic sauce type dish. YUM!
(5)KY C.
I am a Chinese, and I love to order from their authentic Chinese menu (you can request it, they have English subtitle.) (Tips: Many Chinese restaurants have a seperate Chinese version menu, if you ask, you can actually find more authentic true Chinese food, but not every of them has English subtitle.) The food here is big portion with great price. Good for huge group or romantic quiet booth dining. Clean and fast service. Try their Beef Ribs with Black Peper, it is sizzling good. They have good Chinese tea menu as well, if you prefer.
(5)Luke T.
Had a lot of family banquet type events here. The food is always good and priced fair. The portions are also fairly large. The hot and sour soup is consistently good and spiced right. If you do a banquet here they will let you bring your own drinks in and will not charge a cake cutting fee whereas Bo Lings will try to nickel and dime you every chance they get.
(4)Cole M.
It has good food. But anymore a lot of people have good food. The problem is this place doesn't really distinguish itself from other Chinese places.
(2)Julie D.
In my undying quest to find decent Asian food in the greater Kansas City area, I came across New Peking Chinese Restaurant. It was lunch time, or maybe a little past peak time. There were a respectable amount of people there. Service was good. The staff were very attentive. My friend and I did not order off the lunch menu because we had to try our favorite things, or the closest things that we could find, which happened to not be on the lunch menu. I ordered crab rangoons for an appetizer. I know, those are not part of the authentic Chinese diet, but I love them. They were good. I was not disappointed. I ordered hot and sour soup and my friend ordered egg drop soup. They were both good, but not spectacular. They were not quite as flavorful as I was hoping, but I would order them again. For entrees, we ordered beef chow fun, braised eggplant, and salt and pepper shrimp. The beef chow fun looked delicious. The noodles were good, the beef was tender, but neither the flavor of the noodles nor the beef was at all impressive. The braised eggplant was good. The best thing that we ordered was the salt and pepper shrimp. The flavor was great and they seemed to be perfectly fried. All in all, I was satisfied with this restaurant. It has been one of the better Asian restaurants I've been to in the greater Kansas City area.
(3)Sean O.
I have to agree with Helen's review...this place is awesome. The strip mall-like location is actually pretty great...although from the street it isn't obvious. Once inside you will see that it is actually a pretty elegant restaurant. The food is great! Best egg drop soup I have ever had...same for the crab rangoon.
(5)Helen G.
I really really like this place. It's a family run place and the same guy is working the front everyday, you can tell he's working hard but he's always really sweet and attentive. This may sound terrible but sometimes Asian cuisine gives me a salt headache or heartburn but not this place. The service is really good, even when they get swamped. And I haven't really been disappointed with anything I've tried; it has actually inspired me try some new things. Give it a shot, I don't think you'll be disappointed either. Enjoy!
(5)anna w.
(5)Spencer S.
(4)Azile Y.
Order the peking short ribs and the pork and taro hot pot. Omg so good. Great service too.
(4)Maria T.

(2)Crystal C.

Got take out. Excellent beef & broccoli, and egg drop soup. Our crab Rangoon was not fresh, it looked tasted like it was hours old. Overall, pretty decent for the price.

(4)Kim N.
(5)Hannah L.
(3)Michael J.

(4)Jordan W.
Meets and possibly exceeds Bo Ling's for title of best Chinese in KC. Fresh and huge portions of most chicken dishes (which are $10 or less). Highly recommended and worth the drive from Johnson Co.
(5)nicki l.
no reservations at 9pm on a Saturday and we thought we were sunk...nope! stopped in for carry out at new Peking and loved it. the dinner portions are enough to share or make 2-3 more meals. my husband got the house beef and I the chicken with asparagus. the veggies were fresh and all around great dishes!
(5)Alan L.
Some dishes are good and others not so much.
(3)Deandra A.
I love New Peking. The prices are good, the portions are great. The food is excellent and always comes out hot. I really love the duck with onion in ginger hoisin sauce. The drinks are strong, which is good. Service is always good.

My coworkers and I may rarely dine in, but we always order carry out! I love the crab rangoon and the portions of combination lo mein are huge. I usually end up getting two meals out of one serving.

Good food in a nice atmosphere with friendly service.

(5)Dino D.
This place has been around for a long time in its current location, so i think it is safe to say that it provides consistent, satisfactory Americanized Chinese food. Ordered from the take out menu only. Crab Rangoon were especially good. Large portion sizes.

(5)Joanna M.
(4)Case G.
This place is awesome. This is my favorite place to get Chinese carry out in Kansas City. I get carry out here probably once every two weeks and always get the Kung Pao Chicken. It's really easy to carry out and it's always good. They will make it as hot as you like!
(5)Mateo S.
(2)Sara B.
Enjoy!
(5)Kim T.
(4)Candice G.
I'm always satisfied when I come here. I LOVE the CRAB RANGOON, the egg rolls, lettuce wraps and the fried wanton for appetizers. I usually get General Tso's Chicken. The portions are more than expected. I will continue to be a customer.
(5)Tyler Z.
(4)Sya N.

(5)Jessie R.
Excellent food...some of the best that I have had in a long time...food came out with 5 mins of ordering and was delicious!
(5)Daniel K.
Please.
(2)Vicky T.
(4)Mykie D.
(1)Melisa V.
(1)Keanon L.
